Why Kitchen Chimney Cleaning Matters
A chimney filter works by pulling greasy air up and through a mesh or baffle that captures the grease before clean air exits. When the filter is blocked with accumulated grease:
- Suction drops noticeably (you can hear and smell the difference)
- The motor works harder, shortening its lifespan
- Grease can drip back onto the hob or splash onto nearby surfaces
- Fire risk increases โ grease near a gas flame is a serious hazard
- Cooking smells fill the kitchen instead of being expelled
In Gurgaon, where most households cook 2โ3 full meals daily using mustard oil, ghee and strong spices, chimney filters accumulate grease 2โ3 times faster than in homes that cook occasionally.
Types of Chimney Filters (and How to Clean Each)
Mesh / Net Filter
The most common in Indian kitchens. Multiple layers of aluminium mesh that trap grease particles.
Clean every: 1 month (heavy cooking), 2โ3 months (light cooking)
DIY method:
- Remove the filter (usually clips off or slides out โ consult your chimney manual)
- Soak in hot water with a degreasing dish soap or baking soda solution for 30 minutes
- Scrub gently with a soft brush โ never a hard wire brush that can damage the mesh
- Rinse and dry completely before reinserting (moisture in a running chimney can damage the motor)
Professional method: High-pressure steam cleaning and commercial food-safe degreaser, followed by inspection of the mesh condition.
Baffle Filter
Found in higher-end chimneys. Curved metallic baffles separate grease by changing the airflow direction.
Clean every: 2โ3 months
DIY method: Same as mesh โ soak and scrub. Baffle filters are more durable and easier to handle than mesh filters.
Professional method: Dismantle each baffle plate, degrease individually, inspect for deformation.
Cassette Filter (Carbon/Charcoal)

Used in ductless (recirculating) chimneys. These are absorption filters and cannot be washed.
Replace every: 3โ6 months (they cannot be cleaned, only replaced)
Step-by-Step: Professional Kitchen Chimney Deep Clean
This is how Balaji Deep Cleaning's team cleans a chimney during a kitchen deep clean session:
- Protect the cooking area โ the hob, countertops and nearby appliances are covered before dismantling starts
- Remove the filter โ the mesh or baffle filter is removed and placed in a soak tray
- Degrease the filter โ soaked in a commercial food-safe degreaser for 20 minutes, then cleaned with a high-pressure rinse
- Clean the chimney body โ the outer housing, inner walls and grease cup are wiped with degreaser and a microfibre cloth
- Check and clean the grease cup โ the collection cup fills up and can overflow if not regularly emptied; we clean and re-seat it
- Clean motor housing (exterior) โ we do not touch the internal motor, but the exterior housing and air vents are cleaned
- Reassemble and test โ filter is reinstalled, chimney is switched on to verify suction is restored
- Clean around the chimney โ the wall behind the chimney and the ceiling above are wiped down as part of the kitchen deep clean
DIY vs Professional: When to Do Which
| Task | DIY | Professional |
|---|---|---|
| Mesh filter rinse (monthly) | โ Easy, 30 min | Not needed |
| Baffle filter soak (quarterly) | โ Manageable | Optional |
| Grease cup emptying |
